Tiger jack dies

Jack the white tiger

Belfast Zoo’s much-loved white tiger, Jack, has died. He was 17.
Jack came to Belfast on 23 April 1998 from Colchester Zoo and arrived with Jill, the zoo’s other tiger. They shared an enclosure for nine years until Jill died of kidney failure in 2007.
Over the past few weeks, Jack’s health had been monitored by Belfast Zoo vet, Michael Griffith, who took the decision to put him to sleep.
“In tiger years, Jack lived a long life, but suffered a rapid deterioration in health over the past few weeks," he said.
"He became less active, suffered rapid weight loss, and developed a tumour on his throat which had significantly grown in size.”
Because he was a hybrid sub-species, Jack was not part of a breeding programme. But, despite this, he remained very popular with visitors to the zoo who often knew him by name.
Julie Mansell, curator, said: “Jack was a firm favourite with public and staff and will be sorely missed. Some of our visitors may remember Jack because of his fondness for swimming in his pool. This was one of his favourite pastimes."
Jack`s death means the zoo currently has no tigers.
Zoo manager Mark Challis said: “There is a long-term commitment to bring tigers back to the zoo and we are assessing our options.
"Imagine a world without tigers. There are currently estimated to be less than 400 Sumatran and Amur tigers remaining in the world. Tigers are in such a perilous state in the wild that the Sumatran tiger may become the first major mammal extinct in the 21st century.”
For more information on the zoo`s animals, email education@belfastzoo.co.uk or call 028 9077 6277.

Turkish plane crash in Amsterdam

The plane broke into three pieces after crashing in a field

A Turkish Airlines plane has crashed on landing at Amsterdam's Schiphol international airport, injuring at least 20 people.

The plane, with 135 passengers on board, crashed short of the runway near the A9 motorway and suffered significant damage.

It was Flight 1951 from Istanbul and was a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Witnesses have spoken of seeing at least 20 passengers walking from the wreckage, with luggage scattered about.

There were 127 passengers, including a baby, and seven crew on board.

Earlier reports said there was one dead, but Turkish Transport Minister Binali Yildirim later clarified that no-one had died.

Map
Dutch television reported that rescuers had been hampered in getting to the scene because the field was recently ploughed.

The BBC's Geraldine Coughlan in the Hague says television has been showing pictures of helicopters at the scene, with about 20 ambulances and fire engines.

All flights have been suspended.

The last crash involving a Turkish Airlines plane was in 2003 when 65 people died in an accident in Turkey.

Schiphol airport has six runways and one major passenger terminal. In 2007, it handled 47 million passengers, ranking fifth in Europe.

The credit crunch, what really caused it?

It is hard to miss nowadays what the effects are from the credit crunch that we currently see around the world.
The new US president, Barack Obama, has said in his inauguration speech that he will work hard to change the status of the economy into something better. But what needs to be done to change a global crisis like this?

Most important is to find what caused the situation to become the way it is.

I have a few points that I think play an important role which would need to be changed in order to get things back to “normal” again, which I like to highlight here.

First is the US Central bank. This is the only bank that can decide to create money (ie. print new banknotes).
Why is this so important that it has to change?
In order to print banknotes, there should be something with the same value (usually gold) available that covers the value of these banknotes. This is also what used to be the case with the US Central Bank, before it came into private banker’s hands.
The US government has no or limited visibility of the amount of money being created and nobody knows whether there is enough gold to cover the value of the banknotes.
If there is not enough gold to cover the value of all the money that has been produced, this will cause a huge inflation and will probably lead to bankruptcy of the USA and many companies and countries who are depending on the dollar, which is still the main currency for international trade, so it will heavily affect the whole world.
Because of this it is vital that the US Central Bank becomes State owned again.

A second thing, not less important, is the greed of higher management nowadays in Businesses.
The managers make millions of dollars (or whatever currency is used in the country of the business), and even if they fail in their job and are dismissed, they still get several millions with them.
Instead this money should be used for the benefit of the business instead of for the benefit of one or a few managers who’s wages are already so high that it is hard to spend all the money.
Also we have seen businesses make huge profits in the past decades, which meant good times for management and shareholders, but now that times are turning we see the same businesses get into troubles over losses that are not even near 10% of the profits they have made before.
This makes them close businesses, and fire hundreds or thousands of people, which means these people lose most of their income, and in some cases even end up in poverty, while the managers of these companies can still live in luxury by only the interest they receive over the money they put in their private accounts from the earlier profits.
If these managers cared about their business more than about their own bank account they would have used the money to cover for a period when it all goes less well.
Because working businesses is what is needed to keep the economy going. People who are out of work cannot keep the economy at a healthy level, huge bank accounts for a very limited group of people also have no positive affect (apart from that it would be funny to see them if the inflation makes their money completely worthless).
So there should come a limit to how much someone can earn, and although I would prefer to say everyone should earn the same, that will not be possible to achieve fast enough, so I would say just keep allowing the people in higher positions to make more money, but keep it reasonable and create a limit for the top, just like there is a limit for minimum wages.

Police foil German children's dash to Africa

BERLIN (Reuters) - Three German children aged five, six and seven who said they were fed up with cold weather at home set off on a voyage to Africa but only got as far as the local train station, police said on Monday.

The boy and the older girl were planning to get married in Africa and brought the girl's five-year-old sister along as a witness. They left their home in the city of Hanover, which they shared with the boy's father and the girls' mother, early on New Year's Day as their parents slept.

"The children wanted to do something really special for the New Year," said police spokesman Holger Jureczko. "They had it all planned out. They had three suitcases, filled with food, swimming costumes, a lilo and even sunglasses."

He said they took a tram to the central station and were about to board a train to the airport when police stopped them.

"They said they wanted to go to Africa 'because it's so nice and warm there'," Jureczko said. The boy had once been to Italy and convinced the girl that Africa would be even warmer, he said.

The police told the trio that it would be difficult to get to Africa without money or tickets and instead gave them a tour of the police station before handing them over to their parents.

2008 was a safe year to fly

The last year was reasonably save for air traffic. According to NLR-ATSI that keeps track of these figures, 504 people lost their live in airplane accidents in 2008, while the average is at 840.
The safest was to fly in the United States, but also in Europe there were relatively few accidents. Still Europe had the biggest crash of the year. In August 154 lost their lives in a crash with a Spanair plane in Madrid.
Worldwide there were 127 accidents with large commercial flights, of which 22 ended in fatalities for passengers.

Beer lake freezes in German city after truck mishap

BERLIN (Reuters) - A busy intersection in the German city of Kassel turned into a lake of frozen beer on Tuesday when some 1,600 bottles smashed after poorly secured crates flew off a delivery truck, police said.

The truck, carrying 12 tonnes of freshly brewed beer, lost most of its load on a sharp left-hand turn at the bottom of a hill, according to Kassel police inspector Wolfgang Jungnitsch.

Nearly 80 crates carrying about 800 litres flew off the truck, most of the bottles smashed, and their contents quickly froze in the chilly temperature of about -4 degrees Celsius (25 Fahrenheit), he said.

"A sheet of ice quickly formed and the air was filled with beer fumes," Jungnitsch said.

It took an hour to clear the intersection, and police said the trucker faced a fine for not securing his load properly.

Refuse man collects £10,000 banknote jigsaw

LONDON (Reuters) - A rubbish collector in central England could have a very good Christmas if he can solve one of the biggest jigsaw puzzles going -- 10,000 pounds-worth of torn up bank notes.

Graham Hill found the large bundle of cut up 10- and 20-pound notes while emptying bins in Lincoln last May, according to the Lincolnshire Echo newspaper.

He handed the package to police, but after six months no one had claimed the notes and investigators could find no evidence that it was stolen or linked to criminal activity.

The Bank of England said it would exchange the notes for new ones if Hill could piece the money back together again.

"Providing the bank notes meet the evidence requirements, then an application for reimbursement should be successful," a central bank spokeswoman said. "In particular we look at the two serial numbers on the front of the notes."

Colleagues of Hill's are hoping he gets to work quickly.

"I just hope he pieces enough of the notes back together to get a round of drinks in at the works Christmas do," a co-worker was quoted as saying. "Christmas is only around the corner, so any bonus will be welcome."

Marokkaanse pieten verdedigen sint tegen schoffies

Sorry for the people who can't read Dutch, I don't feel like translating this...

French say they need biggest condoms

Photo

BERLIN (Reuters) - The French say they need the largest condoms in Europe while Greeks get by on smaller ones, according to a Europe-wide study by a German consultancy that provides advice on condoms.

The study by the Singen-based Institute of Condom Consultancy was done by asking 10,500 men in 25 countries to measure their penis and enter the number into a database.

The results show Frenchmen on average claim to need 15.48-cm (6.09-inch) long condoms, about 3 cm longer than Greeks, whose condom-size requirement was the most modest.

Jan Vinzenz Krause, the institute's director, told Reuters Friday the data was collected over a period of eight months.

He did not want to comment on how honest he thought the Frenchmen had been in reporting the data.

The survey was aimed at educating youngsters about the importance of effective contraception.

The institute also offers online condom-size advice and hosts "Pimp Your Condom" -- an annual fair organised in cooperation with the national Aids Trust -- with the aim of educating teens about sexually transmitted diseases.

Krause was in the spotlight in the past when he produced a prototype of the "spray-on condom" -- an aerosol can which contains latex that creates a perfectly fitting condom. But the idea was not developed further.

Panda attacks Chinese man who wanted a cuddle

BEIJING (Reuters) - A panda at a zoo in southern China attacked a student who snuck into its pen hoping for a cuddle with the endangered bear, state media said on Saturday.

The 20-year-old male student surnamed Liu jumped over the fence at the zoo in the tourist city of Guilin, ignoring warning signs not to, Xinhua news agency said.

"The panda, named Yangyang, was wide awake. Apparently scared by the intruder, he bit at Liu's arms and legs," it quoted an unnamed worker as saying after zoo keepers managed to calm the bear and rescue Liu, the report said.

"Yangyang was so cute and I just wanted to cuddle him," Liu was quoted as saying from his hospital bed. "I didn't expect he would attack."

Scientists believe fewer than 2,000 giant pandas live in the wild in China.

Dutch couple in India pays $200 for "special" samosas

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A Dutch couple on a visit to the eastern Indian state of Bihar paid 10,000 rupees (136 pounds) for four samosas, a spicy deep-fried snack that usually doesn't cost more than a few rupees, a newspaper reported on Monday.

After the tourists ate the snacks, a stall owner at the Sonepur cattle fair last week told them his "special" samosas cost more because they were made of herbs and had aphrodisiac qualities, the Hindustan Times said.

After an argument, the couple paid the shopkeeper. But they later complained to a policeman.

Police forced the shopkeeper to return the change -- 9,990 rupees.

Aussie sues casino over gambling binge

CANBERRA (Reuters) - An Australian gambler who lost millions in a A$1.4 billion (548.5 million pounds) gaming spree is suing one of the country's largest casinos, claiming he was targeted by managers despite a known gambling addiction.

In a case which lawyers say could have implications stretching to China, gambling addict Harry Kakavas is suing Crown Casino in Melbourne for A$50 million damages after a mammoth 14-month baccarat binge in which he lost A$37 million.

At the time in 2007, property developer Kakavas had been barred from every casino in Australia.

But the Supreme Court in Victoria state was told Crown's Chief Executive Rowen Craigie did not "give a monkey's" about a prohibition in place since 2004, the Age newspaper said.

Supreme Court documents said Kakavas wore a concealed recorder that captured Crown managers allegedly attempting to lure him back to its riverside baccarat tables.

Crown is owned by Australian billionaire James Packer, who also operates Crown Macau and is developing a second casino project, The City of Dreams, in the Chinese territory. The company last year reported profits of A$370 million.

"We have no intention of responding to the allegations made publicly. We are defending the action vigorously," Crown spokesman Gary O'Neill told Reuters.

Craigie and Chief Operating Officer John Williams face accusations of unconscionable conduct while in change of Crown, which this month reported revenue from table games and gaming machines up 4 percent as Packer looks to expand in Macau.

Court documents in Melbourne alleged that emails detailed a Crown plan to lure back Kakavas after managers discovered he had lost millions of dollars gambling in Las Vegas.

If found guilty, Crown could be judged to have breached Australia's Trade Practices Act, state gambling regulations and special laws covering the high-profile casino's operation.

Sarkozy fights back against voodoo doll

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy has threatened to sue a publishing company unless it withdraws a Sarkozy doll that comes with a "voodoo manual" instructing readers to plant pins in it, his lawyer said Tuesday.

The doll is emblazoned with some of Sarkozy's most famous quotes such as "Get lost you pathetic arsehole" -- his words to a bystander who refused to shake his hand at a farm show last year. Readers are encouraged to plant pins in the quotes.

"Nicolas Sarkozy has instructed me to remind you that, whatever his status and fame, he has exclusive and absolute rights over his own image," lawyer Thierry Herzog wrote to publishers K&B in a letter published by newspaper Le Monde.

Confirming details to Reuters, Herzog said Sarkozy would sue the publishing firm if it didn't respond and pull the product. K&B has issued 20,000 copies of the manual and doll.

The company has also issued a Segolene Royal doll representing Sarkozy's rival in last year's presidential election. Her lawyer said she was also considering legal action.

Voodoo is a religion rooted in West Africa that is practiced in parts of the Caribbean, especially Haiti, and parts of the southern United States.

According to a widespread belief, voodoo worshippers can plant pins in dolls representing their enemies to curse them from afar. However, voodoo experts say the practice has been widely misunderstood and misrepresented by outsiders.

Four weddings in China, no funeral reported

BEIJING (Reuters) - Two Chinese wedding banquets held on successive nights at the same restaurant put at least 60 guests into hospital with food poisoning, the latest in a series of village dinner upsets.

Of around 250 villagers who attended the banquets on Friday and Saturday in a rural suburb of Beijing, at least 60 were rushed to hospital in the following days.

"It was embarrassing to have to tell others that I vomited and had diarrhoea at a wedding banquet," the Beijing News quoted one villager as saying.

Earlier this month, 170 guests were poisoned at a wedding banquet in the neighbouring province of Hebei when powdered rust remover was added to the pot instead of salt.

A day earlier, 61 wedding guests suffered food poisoning at a banquet in impoverished Gansu province in the northwest.

China has been hit by a series of food safety scares in recent years, most recently when thousands of infants fell sick from contaminated milk powder that also killed four babies.

Three face court over kangaroo T-shirts

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Three people who showed up at Singapore's supreme court in T-shirts printed with a kangaroo dressed in a judge's gown will be brought to court for contempt, Singapore's attorney general said on Tuesday.

They had "scandalised the Singapore judiciary by publicly wearing identical white T-shirts, imprinted with a palm-sized picture of a kangaroo dressed in a judge's gown," the attorney general said.

The three, who were not identified, had appeared in court in May to watch an opposition leader cross examine two of Singapore's most powerful leaders after he was found to have defamed them.

Vocal opposition leader Chee Soon Juan cross examined Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his father Lee Kuan Yew, founder of modern Singapore, in a three-day hearing that saw the politicians hurl insults at each other.

Singapore bans gatherings and protests in all public areas except Speakers' Corner, the country's equivalent of London's Hyde Park free speech haven.

Women ride Vienna dancing horses after 436 years

[-] Text [+]

By Alexandra Zawadil

VIENNA (Reuters) - An Austrian and a Briton have made history at Vienna's Spanish Riding School by becoming the first female riders to pass the entrance exam and trial period in 436 years.

The women rode the school's white Lipizzaner horses in public for the first time Wednesday and now have the chance to train for five years to become part of the official performing troupe at the school, which was founded in 1572.

The school did not ban female riders previously but has a masculine image because of its military background.

"Today both men and women need to equally earn their daily bread and prove their worth," said Elisabeth Guertler, who became the school's first female director a year ago, and said it needed to keep up with the times.

The horses, which are trained to perform complex moves such as springing from their hind legs, draw sell-out crowds in Vienna and on tour abroad.

But the new recruits have to do some unglamorous stable work before performing difficult manoeuvres on the white stallions.

"We have to feed and groom the horses and clean the stables," said 21-year-old Austrian recruit Hannah Zeitlhofer.

"I always wanted to work directly with horses. I didn't want a purely theoretical job."

The school has been on the lookout for riders with short torsos and long legs, suited to the physique of the smaller horses. In terms of character, riders have to be tough and persistent, Guertler said.

"I think (the horses) are wonderful," said 17-year-old British trainee Sojourner Morrell, who grew up in the United States. "I thought a barn full of stallions was going to be a lot of work but no, they are very calm and beautiful."

I think this is only possible in Belgium

While reading the news I found this article about a pigeon who flew into an airplane´s engine. The owner of the pigeon now has to pay the repair costs:

Australian boy wreaks zoo havoc while feeding croc

Photo

CANBERRA (Reuters) - The parents of a 7-year-old boy who broke into an Australian outback zoo and fed a string of small animals to its resident crocodile are likely to be sued after police said the boy was too young to be held responsible.

A turtle, four western blue tongue lizards, two bearded dragons, two thorny devil lizards and a 1.8 metre (5.9ft) adult female Spencer's goanna were fed or led into the jaws of a 3 metre, 200kg (440lb) saltwater crocodile named "Terry."

Security camera footage at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre showed the smiling youngster also bludgeoning to death a small blue tongue lizard and two more thorny devils during a half-hour of breakfast-time havoc last Wednesday.

"The fact a 7-year-old can wreak so much havoc in such a short time, it's unbelievable. In my day he'd get a big boot up the arse," centre director Rex Neindorf told Reuters by phone.

"Police found him, but in the Northern Territory here he can't be accountable if he's under 10 years of age."

Neindorf said many of the animals fed to the croc were rare or mature and would be difficult to replace.

The boy was unknown at the centre and had "clammed up" when questioned by police on what sparked the rampage, he said.

Neindorf said he was now looking at suing the parents of the pint-sized terror, who could easily have been taken by Terry himself as he fed the croc from a small landing at his enclosure.

"We'll be looking at suing the parents, who were supposedly in control of him at the time," he said.
