Positive feedback

Of course it is always nice to receive positive feedback about the work you are doing from your manager.
Today I received great feedback from the client, which I am very proud of. This is what it said:

....I also like to request of you to convey my personal feedback of two of the member from GEM, S... M...... and Pascal Stil on their commitment in QM through calibration.  Especially to Pascal, who have been an outstanding Quality management agent with wonderful eyes in attention to detail.....

Maybe some people think it is showing off that I publish this here, however I think achieving feedback like this is a reason to be proud and in my opinion there is nothing wrong with showing what makes me proud in my job.

Microsoft to offer free security

The new software will protect machines running XP, Vista, and Windows 7

In a surprise move, Microsoft has announced it will offer a free anti-virus and security solution from the second half of next year.

It will stop selling OneCare, its all-in-one security and PC management service, from the end of June 2009.

The new software, code-named Morro, will be a no-frills program suited to smaller and less powerful computers.

The software will be free to download and will support Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

The move comes as sales of the OneCare subscription service are flagging - reportedly because the anti-virus marketplace is already flooded with big-name players such as Symantec and McAfee.

Since its launch in May 2006, OneCare has garnered less than 2% of the security software market share.

In a statement, Microsoft said that Morro would be designed specifically to be a small-footprint program that uses fewer system resources. This, it said, would be ideal for users with low-bandwidth connections or computers without much processing power.

That will be of particular interest to consumers buying comparatively low-powered "netbook" computers.

Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management in the online services division at Microsoft, said: "This new, no-cost offering will give us the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware."

misunderstanding / nudity on Spaces

Due to my comments on a photo on the Space of one of my friends a discussion was started, and people in that discussion have been misunderstanding me, so therefore I try to clarify things. I will do this in Dutch, because I am not sure if all the involved parties are able to understand this in English good enough.

Latest Windows Live Betas now available

Hey all,

As you may have read on Windows Live Wire, there is a new public beta of the Windows Live client suite available today.

Folks on our team have been using the Beta for a few weeks now, and I wanted to highlight two features that I think are especially relevant to people using Windows Live Spaces:

· Windows Live Writer added awesome support for inserting video.  You can read more in Writer Zone

· Windows Live Messenger has integrated What's New functionality like you see on the signed-in Spaces home.  You can read more in Messenger Says

Thanks for using Windows Live and please leave us comments if you have feedback on the public beta.  Thanks--

News from Windows Live

It's time for a lot of news again from the Windows Live front.
A lot of products will see updates, new products are launched or new versions of products are released.

The probably most popular product, Windows Live Messenger will see the release of a new (Beta) version soon.
This will have a number of new features that you as a user have been asking for.
More information about this will follow as soon as I have it available.

A completely new thing that is directly related to Windows Live Messenger are the Windows Live Agents.
This are Bots that you can add as Messenger contact, and that offer different functionality, based on which Agent you select.
For more information about this you can now visit http://agents.live.com.

Windows Live Hotmail is being updated.
For more information about this visit http://www.windowslive-hotmail.com/comingsoon.

A new product soon to arrive (for Windows Vista users only) is Windows Live Movie Maker. A programm that enables you to make movies from your own photos or videos and with one click publish them on the internet or save them to your computer or a DVD.

An update for Windows Live PhotoGallery will also be available soon. I don't expect too much new features there, but some features will change significantly.

Further news about the last two will be posted once available.

Windows Live Spaces has seen one change today, that is the dissappearing of the Blog printing service.
More information about this can be found on http://thespacecraft.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!8AA773FE0A12B9E3!46433.entry, which also explains a good alternative.
But don't be afraid, Windows Live Spaces is not standing still and also further updates in Spaces can be expected in the not too distant future.
Also for this I will add more information as soon as it is available.

And thought this was all? No, there is more news to be expected soon. I will update once I have found further information

Spammers on Spaces

It happens a lot lately that spammers make use of the option to send people a private message on Spaces.
These messages most of the time look like the following:

So, looks like the time has arrived for me to start using this account. I can hold back no longer! I took a look at your page and well, I liked what I saw.. ;p Sooo my name is ********. I think you and I should be friends, cause you seem pretty nice, and maybe even cute! (it's everso tough to tell in this digital world :) anyways, i'd go on forever, but I want to get an answer from you.. You should check out my other "space" on this other site, I'm always on over there: http://www.********.org/?id=****&mypics (my username is ********). Then maybe we could chat sometime! you know what they say.. appearance wins over the eyes, but personality wins over the heart.. haha.. take care, ********

Unfortunately a lot of people fall for those messages, and either join the particular site, or send a reply to these senders giving their e-mail address and sometimes more details.
I would advice anyone to not reply to any of these messages, but just click at the bottom of the page on Report Abuse and report the sender of the messages to the Abuse team.
Make sure you either keep the message in your inbox or include the URL of the Space from the person who sent the message, so the abuse team can check the details and take appropriate action.

Talking about More information on Friends in common

More information on Friends in common

Have you ever met someone and only realized later that you have a lot of friends in common?  Now you can find see whether you share friends with someone up front through our new ‘Friends in common’ feature.

In the friends module on another person’s space, there is a new area that highlights friends you have in common.  Right away you can see the number of people you both know and the profile pictures of some of those friends.

Want to see the rest of your mutual friends?  Click on In common and you’re taken to a full page view that shows all of your friends as well as separate lists of friends in common and friends that you don't have in common.  This way you can also discover new people that you might know in real life, but are not connected with on Windows Live.

           Friend_in_common_1                                      Friends_in_common_2

Finding friends in common is also especially important when planning an event on Windows Live Events.  Who wants to go to a party when none of your friends are going?

On the Guest list area of every event, you can now quickly see how many of your friends have also been invited to the event.  Just click on See who’s going and see whether or not your friends are planning to go.

Friends_in_common_3

On another note, we’ve been reading the comments about Lists that people have left on the Space Craft, and we wanted to use this blog entry to update you on our thinking.  We made the changes to lists to improve consistency of the list feature on Spaces main page, but realize that displaying the list description is more important than layout consistency; therefore, we’ll be rolling back the changes we made last week to restore list descriptions to their original form. The restoration may take a few weeks, so please stay tuned.

We hope the new features will allow you to manage your relationships as well as find and connect with more people on Windows Live.  Thanks for your continued feedback!

Talking about Welcome to the bigger, better, faster SkyDrive!

Quote

Welcome to the bigger, better, faster SkyDrive!
We know it's been mighty quiet on the SkyDrive blog, but we’ve been hard at work on a new version that we’re proud to announce today!

You've made two things clear since our first release: You want more space; and you want SkyDrive where you are. Today we're giving you both. You now have five times the space you had before — that’s 5GB of free online storage for your favorite documents, pictures, and other files.

SkyDrive is also available now in 38 countries/regions. In addition to Great Britain, India, and the U.S., we’re live in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Finland, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Turkey.

This release also includes bug fixes and improvements to make the site even faster and more reliable. We’re proud of this release — so proud, in fact, that we’re officially removing the Beta tag!

Check out the new version and let us know what you think. We hope you enjoy it!

Add more photo modules on your Space

You will be able to add more photo modules (I believe 5 total) so you can show different ones on the same page:

pic5

To add a different album you will need to add the photo module then click on “Edit Module”

pic6

Choose “Custom Album” and select the one you want.

Album Picker

Album Picker.

Now you can remove the list of other photo albums (album picker) in your Photo Modules.

This is how a photo album looks today:

pic1

Now, you have the opportunity to remove the picker by editing the photo module

pic2

pic3

OR if you check the “Play all selected albums” to rotate the albums.

You can also add the module ( Customize, Add Modules, choose  Photos to “Show”).  To do this you will need to choose the “Custom Album Selection” and you can select the album you wish to feature.

pic4

The albums are selectable J  Some little FYI’s:

· Album sort order is global – changing a sort in any module will be reflected globally.

· You can select which albums will be displayed in the album picker.

o Albums remain selected even if the album name is changed.

§ When the album is renamed, the module title should be updated accordingly, on the next page/module load.

· By default, all albums are displayed in the module album picker.

· Clicking on the slideshow will take the user into the single album view for that slideshow.

o The single album view opens on the same photo as was displayed in the slideshow.

· Only the author can view and modify the album preferences.

o In an Event space, editors can change the album that the Slideshow displays.

· The Module preferences is where the author of the Space can specify the following options:

o Show / Hide the album picker

§ Default = SHOWN

o Iterate through all albums

§ Default = DISABLED (only play back the top album, behavior today)

§ When enabled, the slideshow repeats over all selected albums, instead of just the first album.

o Slideshow speed (Slow, Medium, Fast)

§ Default = MEDIUM

o Select which albums to include in the current module.

· The slideshow module will respect album permissions. It will follow the behavior of the Photos module.

· Event “organizers” will have the ability to add and edit slideshow modules.

More new feature in Windows Live Spaces

Feature: Friends in Common

This feature shows visitors to a Space which friends they have in common with the Space’s owner. This is determined by showing the same friends  between the two friends (owner and the visitor’s) lists.  This is  dependent on whether or not the two users are friends or if the owner’s Space is public.  In addition, non-mutual friends will be shown to the visitor to encourage new connections and highlight people that the visitor knows in person and the owner is friends with online but the visitor may not have connected with on the Windows Live network yet (see scenarios, below)

Quick Review of “Friends in Common” feature:

1. Show visitors what friends they have in common with Space’s owners
2. Show visitors what friends they do not have in common with the Space’s owners
3. This feature shouldn’t take away from the current experience of seeing a person’s friends in the friend’s module – it not meant as a replacement.

A section will be added to the Friends module entitled “In common”.  If the visitor to a Space is signed in with a Live ID and has permission to see the owner’s list of friends then Space’s can compare the visitor’s list of friends to the owner’s list of friends to find mutual ones..  Any friends that appear in both the viewer’s list of friends and the owner’s list of friends will be shown under the title “In common” in this module.

In the case of invited friends of the viewer, they will also be included in the mutual friends list.  For example, if Tomoya has invited Naoki and Naoki has not yet accepted but Tomoya is friends with Louis, when Tomoya looks at Louis’  friend list he will see Naoki listed as a mutual friend.  The invited tag will appear to the user to avoid confusion and falsely signifying that the acceptance has occurred.
If the viewer has no mutual friends with the owner of the space, the “In common” title will not appear.  The view of the friends module will be consistent with the current layout of what you see now.

Windows Live Spaces, how it works...

There are a number of things that are often not clear to people about Windows Live Spaces.
Today I decided to explain a bit more about two of them...

The first of them are the Statistics.
A lot of people think they can see in the statistics who visited their Space.
This is NOT true.
The statistics only show how many pageviews your Space had, which page has been viewed at what time, and a link to where the visitor came from to that particular page.
This link is the tricky part, because often this shows a link to another Space, and then people think the owner of that Space has visited them.
WRONG!

This only means that on the time that someone came from that Space to your Space there was a link on that Space which was clicked and brought a visitor to you.
This can for instance mean that your Space was displayed in the list of updated Spaces and someone who was just visiting the other Space chose to click on this link to watch your Space as well.
Of course the owner of the Space in question can also have clicked on the link on his own Space, but there is no guarantee it is the same person.
The only way you can find out who visited your Space is when they leave a comment and include details on who they are.

Another thing I'd like to be a bit more clear about is the Code of Conduct and Abuse on Spaces.

It is true that the Code of Conduct is not very clear about the limits of what is allowed on Spaces, and because of this a lot of people are receiving warnings or find their Spaces suddenly disabled without having a clue what this is about, because their Space does not contain pornography.

Well, let me first make one thing clear. Not all nudity is pornography, but all nudity is prohibited on Windows Live Spaces.
This includes cartoons, drawings, paintings, sculptures and whatever you can think about, when it is nude, just don't put it on your Space.

When is something nude?
The definion of nude can be hard to give. Here is how it is considered in Windows Live Spaces:
When buttocks, genitalia or the nipples of female breasts are visible it is nudity. This also includes pictures of body-paints, young children having a bath, see through clothing and even normal clothing when for instance the nipples are clearly visible. Specially the pictures of young children are often a cause of misunderstanding when proud parents want to share the pictures of their child(ren) with others, without the intention of doing anything wrong.

Naturally pornography is also not allowed, this includes suggestive text and pictures. So it is not necessary that actual sexual act is visible in pictures to have a Space closed. A picture of two human figures in a position that indicates sexual activity is considered pornography and a reason to disable a Space.

Is nudity and pornography the only abuse?
No, surely not. There are lots of things that are not allowed, some more are racism, copyright violations, harassment, personal identifiable information, other things listed in the Code of Conduct, and anything that is illegal in the country of the owner of the Space (so in some countries particular content can be abuse while it is not in other countries).

Is it ok if I set my permissions so that only I can see my Space?
Sure that is fine, but the same rules apply. The Code of Conduct applies to all Spaces, no matter what permissions you chose.

My Space is disabled, what can I do now?
It is always worth contacting the Spaces abuse department if your Space has been disabled. You can use the Report Abuse link at the bottom of the page for that.
They will look into each case and decide on the level of the violation if it is possible to give you another chance to delete the illegal content from your Space.
If they give you this second chance your Space will be enabled again for a certain amount of time and you will have to delete all illegal content within that time.
If you don't do this it will be disabled again and you will not get a third chance.

I am not sure about something I posted is allowed, how can I find out?
Leave a comment in this post or in my guestbook and I will have a look (of course your Space needs to be Public or you have to give me access, otherwise I can't see what content you mean).

There is something I still don't understand. How can I get more explanation?
First of all, click on the icon with the question mark at the top right, you can find a lot of information about Spaces there.
If your question is also not answered there you can contact Windows Live Spaces support through http://support.live.com. You can also ask questions here, but I will only answer questions about Spaces which are directly related to what I have posted here.
